I told myself this morning that if I made my weekly word count goal for the novel today, I’d join Jen and the rest of the gang for this week’s 7 Quick Takes.
A writer who rewards herself for writing with… more writing.
Go ahead. Think what you will.

Today I am officially 28 weeks, and therefore officially in my third trimester. Say hello to the (interminable) homestretch!
- 3 -
Speaking of homestretch: Look who just arrived!
My new niece Rachel Veronica, and isn’t she the cutest thing?
(The answer to that question is, “YES.”)
Here’s my nephew Jack-Jack, adjusting to life with a sister:
A sweet kiss here, no doubt, but Jack’s favorite way to love on his sister is to pat her. And by, “pat,” I mean, “Jack’s wooden mallet that he carries everywhere with him and even sleeps with has, gee, suddenly gone missing.”
My sister says they’re working on being gentle. I say Rachel had better develop some survival skills, and fast.

“Hats!” Ben said at the recent reappearance of these:
Not quite, buddy. But if you know what these are, then you’ll know that I’ve been…

Now, some people hate it when everyone chalks up everything they do while pregnant to being pregnant:
“I’m not nesting, it’s just that my bottom pantry shelves really needed to be sealed with five coats of polyurethane!”
“I don’t have cravings. I’ve always liked pickles on my pepperoni pizza!”
“Do NOT tell ME that MY OPINION is nothing BUT pregnancy HORMONES!”
I know. Some of you get tired of others seeing you as one big uterus.
Not me. I don’t mind being Uterus Girl – at least, not until the ninth month, at which point (you all can relate) the question, “So, when are you due?” is likely to be answered with a Death Glare. But for now, Uterus Girl is happy to be Uterus Girl, and Uterus Girl is, unabashedly, wholeheartedly NESTING.
Last week, I…
…dug a new flowerbed, using a shovel and a hand tiller (which was a really, really dumb idea because it gave me eighteen hours of non-stop Braxton-Hicks contractions)…
…cleaned out some closets (look at that magnificent organization!)…
…and I pulled out all the necessary and gender-neutral baby stuff from storage, washed it, and threw it in the Pack-n-Play I set up in our bedroom. Look at those teensy-weensy-wittle-handknit-sweaters!

And, as mentioned a thousand times, to the point of my becoming monotonous and irksome, I’m also working on my novel. Does novel-writing count as nesting? I think it might. A due date is such a wonderfully concrete, motivating deadline.
My almost-three-year-old, despite my best efforts, has not yet mastered the art of managing his own affairs, and (sigh) I will never (pout) have the experience of a 10,000 word day. But, thanks to this…
…he suffers Mommy putting in 1,500 to 2,000 words a day. Good enough for government work.

Do you hate most kiddie music as much as we do? Then check this (good stuff) out:
Ben loves to watch the KidsTV123 YouTube channel, where A.J. Jenkins, the artist, has posted much of his music, available free. The songs have a folksy feel that Ben likes and doesn’t grate on Mom and Dad’s ears. As much as we’d like him to only listen to Mozart and Gregorian chant, we know that’s not possible. KidsTV123 is our happy compromise. Check it out!
That’s all for now. Read some other Quick Takes, and have a great weekend.
