Like most three-year-olds, my son Benedict loves animals. His stuffed animal collection grows steadily, he loves to flip through his copies of Good Morning, Farm and the Smithsonian Book of Natural History, and not a day goes by where he doesn’t sing his favorite animal sounds song.
Unfortunately for Ben, his parents are disinclined to keep a pet.
My husband and I like animals in our own way. We both had outdoor dogs as pets growing up, and I’m fond of cats, though my husband claims, ahem, he’s allergic to them. I grew up in a heavily-agricultural area of Oregon and had friends and family involved in 4-H, and while I lack the knowledge and skill to take care of livestock, I feel comfortable enough around animals.
